A super moon is a full moon that occurs when the moon is at its closest point of orbit. The second full moon of winter is called a snow moon. This year the snow moon is a super moon, so the super snow moon will appear from Friday evening to Monday morning with its fullest @2:33a.m. eastern standard time on Sunday, February 9th. It will look especially large when rising and setting.
According to NASA, this moon is important for other reasons as well. Jewish celebrations of TUBishvat, the new year of trees. It is the first full moon Chinese New year, which signifies the end of the Chinese New year celebrations and the day of the Chinese lantern festival. The moon also coincides with an important Buddhist festival Magha Puja, this festival commemorates the spontaneous gathering of 1,250 Buddha followers to hear “The Ovadhapatimokha,” a famous sermon by the Buddha.
